Greeting cards have come a long way since their humble origins some 600 years ago. The earliest known greeting card dates from the 1400s; it's a handmade Valentine, but New Year's cards were popular back then too. The practice of exchanging cards on a regular basis emerged just 200 years ago, when wealthy Britons and Americans began to use them to keep in touch. These handmade cards were portable pieces of art, quite expensive, and always hand-delivered. By the 1850s, canny printers had begun to mass-produce greeting cards anyone could afford, and it wasn't long before preprinted return address labels for mail delivery followed. The golden years of greeting cardsModern teenagers may find it difficult to believe, but once upon a time the only economical way for people to keep in touch was through "snail-mail" correspondence. Greeting cards were an excellent way to do this, and still are. Christmas and birthday cards have always represented the majority of greeting cards posted, but there are plenty of other events requiring cards. Weddings, births, christenings and baptisms, anniversaries, and graduations are all important events that shouldn't be allowed to pass unnoticed, and that means a nice card, at the very least. When you send that special card, don't forget to add a touch of class and dress up the envelope with your own personalized address labels. Cards for all reasons and seasonsWhen you need to send 50 special occasion cards to all the people closest to you - then a hand crafted card that symbolizes what is important to you is the way to go! Why not choose a designer Christmas card with a matching envelope and add a festive holiday address label, complete with snowman? That special someone in your life deserves something that's customized. Some greeting cards are pure announcements, like New Baby cards; some are congratulatory, like Anniversary cards; and some are celebratory, like Mother's Day cards. The best greeting cards, of course, contain elements of all three; and the very best ones are handmade. Published with permission (FCDMInc)
